MONTH 7 – JESUS’ SACRIFICIAL DEATH

INVITE WEEK

A GOSPEL OF RECONCILIATION

LEADER PREPARATION
Lesson Summary:

Note: These lessons are designed to be 30 minutes long. If your club time is shorter than this, we encourage you to be prayerful about parts of this lesson to put more or less emphasis on. If limited on time, we urge you to prioritize Tool Time and summarize Dig In, as Tool Time is what prepares you for sharing the Gospel. As always, let the Holy Spirit guide your leadership.

The Gospel is a story of reconciliation between God and people and people with each other. Jesus came so we could have everything we need for a new life in relationship with God.
Through Jesus, we can experience a new life in Him and eternity with God forever in heaven.

This week, choose from one of the following options for DIG IN:

  1. Have a Student Leader share the Gospel Message using something they’ve created, found, or by using the provided Gospel presentation sample below.
  2. Have a Student Leader share their testimony. They can use these questions to help guide their thoughts.
      • “How was my relationship with God and others broken through my disobedience or sin?
      • “What does Jesus’ death and resurrections have to do with me?”
      • “How have I experienced God’s resurrection life through the Holy Spirit?”

Main Point
Jesus’ death and resurrection provide healing for our broken relationships.

Team Roles

Host: This Student Leader will lead the Start Up section of the lesson, helping create a fun
environment, making everyone feel welcome and included.
Speaker: This student leader will guide the group in growing deeper in their faith by reading and reflecting on passages of scripture. They will then connect the content to the group’s daily lives by asking practical questions and leading the conversation.
Other Roles: Promo, Welcome, and Follow Up.

(7 minutes)
Say: Welcome to First Priority. We are glad you are here!

Icebreaker Game: Desert Island

Explain to the group that they are about to be dropped off on a desert island and that they get to choose just ONE item from each of the following categories to take with them. Give each student only three seconds to share their answers to help keep the game moving.

  • Snack
  • Music Album
  • Drink
  • TV Series
  • Movie
  • Book

Say: This game gave us a great peek into what each of us considers essential for life on a deserted island! Some of the answers were certainly creative and unexpected. But I wonder if we know what is truly essential to live a life fully obedient to God’s ways?

We know that we have been forgiven for our sins and brought back to God through Christ. But did you know that Jesus also came so we could have everything we need for a new life in relationship with God starting now?

(5 minutes)

  • Option 1: Student Leader shares Gospel message (sample provided below).
  • Option 2: Student Leader shares testimony.

Option 1: Gospel Presentation Sample

Say: Have you ever felt left out or excluded from something everyone else is doing? We all have at some point in our lives. Maybe they are having a big party at someone’s home while their parents are out of town, or going to a concert featuring the most famous singer. And you sit at home wondering why you haven’t been invited. It is easy to assume that your friends are having the time of their lives while you stand on the outside looking in.

Even when their choices are out of line with your values and character, it can be tempting to think the crowd is the place to find acceptance and even joy. Maybe you have been the one in the crowd, and you know that the smiles often hide shame and brokenness.

God created you for relationship with Him and others, but we can mistake a crowd for true belonging and temporary satisfaction with lasting joy.

Within each of us is a drive to belong, to be completely known and loved. This hunger is a reminder that we were created to find our home not in four walls but in a relationship with God. What we truly crave is to have our relationship with God and one another restored.

But every time we choose our own way instead of God’s, we take a step away from home. The irony is that the very hunger that is felt when we try to fit in and belong is what drives us away from the only relationship capable of filling our hearts and spirits completely.

Our sin has created a barrier between us and God that keeps us from true connection with Him and with each other. Despite the gap between us, God pursued us and has promised a way home for each of us in Jesus. God has broken down all the walls that our sin has caused, and He invites us to experience true and lasting peace, joy, and the sense that we are finally home.

Read Scripture: Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation. (Colossians 1:21-22)

Say: Jesus’ death overcame all the brokenness that kept us from God. His sacrifice covered all our disobedience and shame. Because of Jesus, God views us as holy-without any of the marks of our sin. The God of the universe has chosen you and invites you into an eternal relationship with Him!

(18 Minutes)
Ask: So the big question is, SO WHAT? What does Jesus’ death have to do with you and your life today? How does it affect your relationship with God? (Let students think about this for just a moment.)

Say: Every day we see the impact of sin. We see hatred and think, “That’s not right.” Maybe a friend or relative dies, and we grieve at the separation. Our relationships are broken and we long for a way to fix them. Something inside us carries the memory of a world without shame, death, or sin. In the deepest parts of us, we ache for a life that is trouble free.
In so many ways, we miss a home with God that we have never experienced.

Read Scripture: He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. (Ecclesiastes 3:11)

Say: The Bible teaches us that God has set eternity in each of our hearts. We were created for full and complete friendship with Him, and, without it, we all have a feeling of being incomplete and homesick. Our true home is in him, and it is through Jesus that we can find that.

Ask: What does home mean to you? What do you think it means that we have found a home in God through Jesus? (Let students think about this for just a moment.)

No matter who you are or what you have done, because of Jesus, God can see you as holy, pure, and restored. Not only does God want to heal our relationship with Him, He also desires for us to be restored in our relationships with others. Our main point reminds us that Jesus’ death and resurrection provide healing for our broken relationships.

His invitation is for you. Now it’s up to you whether you want to accept it. If this is your first time hearing about God, or if you have never heard God’s love described to you in this way, you can pray a simple prayer right now to start a relationship with God!

Say: If you’d like to follow Jesus today, please close your eyes, and we will all say this simple prayer together. Repeat after me:

Dear God,
Thank you for loving me and wanting a relationship with me. I know that I cannot save myself. Please forgive me for my sins.
Jesus, I believe you died for me and then rose again. Help me to truly live for you all the days of my life. Amen.

Closing: If you prayed that prayer for the first time or were recommitting your life today, then we want to celebrate you! This is the most important decision you will ever make! We would love to talk with you and answer any questions you might have. We also want to give you a Bible and connect you with a church if you don’t have one. As we end our time today, we will pass out some cards where you can mark if you made that decision today or if you want more information as you learn about God. (Give students a moment to fill out the cards.)
